With 1,672 new infections in Austria, the number of people who became infected with the coronavirus within 24 hours was again high on Sunday. This is almost twice as many new confirmed cases as in the comparable period on Sunday before. On Saturday, a record number of 1,747 new infections had been reported. Most cases were in Vienna (431) ahead of Lower Austria (356) and Upper Austria (274).
On Sunday, 742 people were undergoing hospital treatment for Covid-19 and 135 of them were in intensive care, the Interior Ministry reported. The total number of persons in whom the virus SARS-CoV-2 was detected increased to 64,806, 893 died and 49,561 recovered. Thus there were 14,346 acute cases nationwide on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Augustinian Canons Regular in Herzogenburg Abbey (district of St. Pölten-Land) have been in quarantine since Saturday, after Propst Petrus Stockinger tested positive for the corona virus. The 38-year-old propst had shown symptoms of the disease, which have so far been mild, the monastery said. Several cases of corona had already been reported in the canon’s surroundings. As a result of the quarantine, all tours of the monastery have been cancelled for the time being. According to the monastery’s website, planned confirmations and services in the 14 Herzogenburg monastery parishes are also affected.
